Power cuts and voltage fluctuations are a harsh reality across Indian cities and towns. But buying a UPS is not as simple as picking the biggest one on the shelf. If you undersize it, your devices will switch off faster than you expect. If you oversize it, you are paying for capacity you will never use. Step 1: Calculate the Total Load in Watts
Every UPS is rated in VA (Volt-Amps) and Watts. The wattage tells you how much real power the UPS can deliver, and the VA rating covers how much power it can supply on paper. As a rule of thumb, assume a power factor of 0.6 to 0.8, so a 1000 VA UPS typically delivers 600 to 800 Watts of usable output.
To size your UPS, add up the power consumption of everything you plan to connect:
- A standard desktop PC with a monitor draws roughly 200 to 300 Watts.
- A gaming or workstation PC with a powerful GPU can draw 500 to 800 Watts or more.
- A Wi-Fi router plus a CCTV DVR adds about 50 to 80 Watts.
- A laser printer can spike to 500+ Watts at the moment of printing, so it is safer to keep printers off the UPS or add generous headroom.
Once you have the total load, multiply it by 1.2 to 1.4 to build in safe headroom. A load of 300 Watts should therefore be supported by a UPS rated at roughly 420 to 500 Watts, or about a 650 to 800 VA unit.
Step 2: Choose the Right UPS Technology
UPS systems broadly fall into three topologies, and your choice depends on how sensitive your equipment is:
Offline / Standby UPS
This is the most common and most affordable type. The equipment runs on mains power, and the UPS switches to battery only when mains fails. The switchover takes a few milliseconds, which is fine for desktops and routers. Brands such as APC and Microtek offer reliable offline UPS models for homes and small offices.
Line-Interactive UPS
A line-interactive UPS adds automatic voltage regulation (AVR), which stabilises voltage without switching to battery. It is ideal for areas with frequent voltage fluctuations, brownouts, or unstable grids. It provides better protection for sensitive equipment and is the recommended choice for most offices and home offices in India.
Online / Double-Conversion UPS
An online UPS runs the load on the battery continuously, providing perfect sine-wave output and zero transfer time. It protects against every kind of power problem, including frequency variations. It is more expensive and produces more heat, so it is reserved for servers, network racks, and sensitive medical or laboratory equipment where even a single millisecond of interruption is unacceptable.
Step 3: Decide How Much Backup Time You Need
Backup time depends on three things: battery capacity (Ah), the connected load, and battery condition. As a general guide:
- An 800 VA UPS with a standard battery gives a desktop roughly 10 to 15 minutes of backup, enough to save work and shut down cleanly.
- A 2000+ VA line-interactive or online UPS with one or two 12V/26Ah batteries can run a router, DVR, and PC for 30 to 60 minutes.
- For true long-duration backup, upgrade to larger batteries such as 12V/42Ah or 12V/65Ah, or add an external battery pack. Many Microtek and APC UPS models support external battery expansion.
Remember that a battery that has aged for more than 2 to 3 years will deliver far less backup time than when it was new. UPS batteries and storage solutions need periodic testing and replacement to keep your protection reliable.
Step 4: Count the Outlets and Ports You Need
Check the number of power outlets on the UPS you are considering. A home UPS typically has 2 to 4 backup outlets. If you need more, look for models with extra outlets, or connect a protected power strip to the UPS. Also check whether the UPS offers surge protection for telephone or Ethernet lines if you are protecting a router or modem setup.
Step 5: Don't Forget Maintenance and Battery Care
A UPS is only as good as its battery. Keep the UPS in a cool, ventilated area, clean the air vents regularly, and test the unit every two to three months by simulating a power cut. If your UPS beeps continuously even on mains power, or if backup time drops below half of the rated duration, the battery likely needs replacement.
Pro tip: Connect only critical equipment to the UPS. Plugging in heavy appliances like refrigerators or AC compressors will drain the battery rapidly and can damage the UPS inverter.
Which UPS Should You Buy?
For a standard home desktop setup, a 600 to 800 VA line-interactive UPS from APC or Microtek is a dependable, budget-friendly choice.
